Midwest Number Theory Conference for Graduate Students IV

October 28-29, 2006

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Department of Mathematics, Altgeld Hall

We would like to thank everyone for their participation at the conference. Look for MNTCG V to take place at the University of Wisconsin at Madison sometime in Fall 2007.

Objectives

The Midwest Number Theory Conference for Graduate Students gives graduate students and recent PhDs an opportunity to meet and give talks in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. This is the fourth year for the conference, with the location alternating between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Talks by graduate students and recent PhDs in all areas of number theory are welcome. We encourage graduate students of all levels to attend.

Schedule

Registration will begin on Saturday at 8:30 am, with talks beginning at 9:00 am. We will have an informal dinner on Saturday night around 6:00 pm, after the talks are done. Sunday morning the talks will begin again at 9:00 am, and we expect to be able to finish by 1:00 pm on Sunday.

The schedule of talks is now available.

Talks

Talks will be 15 minutes long. There will be overhead projectors and chalkboards in the room, as well as a projector for laptop presentations. Please bring copies of your talk on transparencies in the event that the projector does not work as it should.

Last year's organizers provided some tips for preparing a talk. You may find them useful even if you have given several talks in the past. For more information about giving talks and mathematical exposition in general, see A Primer of Mathematical Writing, Steven G. Krantz, AMS.

Registration

Online registration is now available. Note the deadline for contributing a talk is October 16, and the deadline for requesting support is October 1.

Travel

The University of Illinois is located in Urbana-Champaign in Illinois. The math department is in Altgeld Hall at the corner of Green St. and Wright St. Urbana-Champaign is also serviced by several airlines, Amtrak and Greyhound.

Parking

On weekends, certain lots are free to the public. On this (not so easy to read) map, Altgeld Hall is building number 26 (in D-8). Lots C7 and C10 are both parking garages in which you may park for free.

Accommodations

The Hampton Inn (map) is about 4 blocks from the math department. There is some free parking on campus on the weekends so if you are driving you can also find other hotels in Champaign or Urbana. Most city buses stop by Altgeld Hall as well. Unfortunately, there are no hostels or available dorm space in Urbana-Champaign.

If you would like us to find a roommate for you, please e-mail us.

Support

Support will be available to cover reasonable travel costs for those attending the conference. You must register and indicate that you would like support by October 1, 2006. Please download this form and fill out the relevant sections before coming to the conference. You do not need to send anything in advance; just bring everything with you when you come to the conference. If you are not a U.S. citizen, please read carefully what documents we must have in order to reimburse you.

Note for H1, B, and J1 Visa holders: You must submit an Authorization Letter signed by the Chair of your department or the International Office of your University. It should state that the University of Illinois may reimburse you directly for your expenses incurred to attend the conference. Please bring this to the conference with you.
